Week 12 Notes:

Headlines

Only four ranked teams went down to defeat in week 12, the most impactive being #5 Stanford's 20-17 loss to USC, ranked #25 prior to their win and able only to move up three spots in this week's chart, just ahead of Texas, which dropped from #15 to #23 with their 38-1`3 drubbing at the hands of Oklahoma State.

The Cardinal, despite a win over Oregon, now holds two losses, making them ineligible for top 10 status, now at #12, but with chances to redeem themselves.

At the top of the heap, #1 Alabama topped Mississippi State in a hard-hitting contest, 20-7. The Crimson Tide is followed by #2 Ohio State, a 60-35 winner over Illinois, and #3 Florida State, who creamed Syracuse, 59-3, and appear headed for a national championship argument, as the BCS system seems to be favoring them over the Buckeyes presently.

Baylor remained moored at #4, though they too - along with the top three - are unbeaten, at 10-0, after cruising past Texas Tech, 63-34, continuing on a pace to set scoring and yardage records for a single season.

Those four are the only undefeated teams remaining with a legitimate shot at playing for the national championship, though, if they all win out, may be a fitting end to the imperfect BCS system, due to be replaced with a four-team playoff next season.

Rounding out the top ten are Michigan State at #5, followed by Oregon, Fresno State, Northern Illinois, Clemson and UCF, which needed a game-winning field goal as time expired to get past Temple, 39-36, a surprising score.

Nebraska and Virginia Tech were bounced from the rankings with losses to Michigan State and Maryland, respectively. They are replaced by 8-2 Duke at #24, due to their win over Miami, 48-30, and, Minnesota, also at 8-2, though not well-appreciated.
