Week 4 Notes:

First 20 of Top 25 Retain Positions

In what has to be considered a statistical oddity, only one of the top 25 teams in the Downtown Magazine rankings lost, that being #21 Arizona State, falling to #6 Stanford, the only match-up between ranked opponents.

Therefore, the rankings were largely unchanged, the first 20 staying in place, and the bottom four, South Carolina, Arizona, Fresno State and Wisconsin each moving up one spot. #25 was filled by surprising Maryland, 4-0 after blistering West Virginia, 37-0.

That put five teams from the ACC into the rankings, beginning with #2 Clemson, a 26-14 winner over NC State on Thursday night.

Following the Tigers are #10 Florida State, Georgia Tech and Miami, at #19 and 20, respectively, and #25 Maryland. The Terrapins get a week off before playing at Florida State on October 5, a true test for dominance in the conference, and, in the Atlantic Division, where both teams, along with Clemson, reside.

Surprisingly left out of the ACC mix is Virginia Tech, which suffered an opening weekend loss to Alabama and has struggled the past two weeks, barely slipping by East Carolina, 15-10 and having to go three overtimes to win at home against upset-minded Marshall, 29-21.

Big scores were put up by #4 Ohio State, a 76-0 winner over Florida A&M, and Louisville, the only entrant from the American Athletic conference, a 72-0 winner over Florida International.

Top-ranked Oregon was idle, #3 Alabama easily dispatched Colorado State, 31-6.

The rest of the games played by ranked teams were similar in their one-sidedness, except for Michigan's 24-21 win over Connecticut. Even though the game was on the road, the 7th-ranked Wolverines struggled and came back from a two TD deficit to hand the Huskies the loss.

#8 LSU prevailed in the rain at home over previously-unbeaten Auburn, 35-21. #9 UCLA crushed New Mexico State, 59-13, and #10 Florida State trounced Bethune-Cookman, 54-6.

Unranked teams knocking on the door include Notre Dame, a 17-13 winner over Michigan State, Northwestern, which handled Maine, 35-21, and Florida, beating Tennessee, 31-17, though the Gators may not have enough offense to sustain themselves through the SEC regular season.
