Week 9 Notes:

Only Eight Unbeaten in Top 25 Rankings

The ranks of the undefeated dropped to eight teams this week, as Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma, 38-30, dropping the Red Raiders from #8 to #13, and #9 Missouri lost at home to South Carolina, 27-24, in double overtime, falling all the way to #16 in the current Top 25.

Virginia Tech, which had risen through the ranks up to #6 in week 8, fell precipitously to #17, after losing to Duke, 13-10.

The top five entered and left the week unscathed and looking better than ever.

Top-ranked Oregon, which has held that position since the start of the season, remained well-entrenched, pummeling UCLA, 42-14, outscoring the Bruins 28-0 in the second half.

#2 Alabama had little problem handling upset-minded Tennessee in Tuscaloosa, hammering the Volunteers, 45-10, holding Tennessee scoreless for the first thirty minutes, while piling up 35 first-half points.

At #3, Ohio State, like the two teams above, improved to 8-0 with a resounding, 63-14, triumph over Penn State, the relentless Buckeyes taking a 42-7 edge into the half, turning the ball over to subs in latter stages of the game.

Florida State, 7-0, after pounding NC State, 49-17. The Seminoles have been the most dominant team in the ACC all season and continue to march toward a place in the conference championship game and a potential national championship spot, though the field is certainly crowded.

#5 Baylor led 38-0 at Kansas at half time, continuing on to a 59-14 thrashing of the 2-5 Jayhawks. The Bears are also 7-0, as are #7 Miami (7-0), #8 Fresno State (7-0) and #9 Northern Illinois (8-0).

The only teams not with unbeaten marks in the top ten are #6 Stanford (7-1), a late-night, 20-12 winner at Oregon State, and #10 Michigan State, improving to 7-1 with a ruthless defense that held Illinois without a touchdown in a 42-3 lashing.

Oklahoma and South Carolina, the teams ending, respectively, Texas Tech's and Missouri's unbeaten seasons, finish the week ranked #21 and #24.

UCLA, Nebraska and Oregon State each fell out of the rankings completely.

BYU entered the rankings at #22, after pounding Boise State, 37-20. The Cougars are 6-2 and independent, playing one of the roughest schedules in the country, having already beaten Texas, with Wisconsin and Notre Dame still ahead.
