Thursday, August 29

Detroit Lions (-4 1/2, 39 1/2) at Buffalo Bills, 7:00 pm - The Lions ate up the patriots last week, 40-9, while the Bills looked inept in all-important week 3, undone by the Redskins, 30-7.

Buffalo is down to third string QB, Jeff Tuel, on the depth chart, which doesn't bode well for the Bills. Tuel, out of Washington State, was good in weeks one and two of the preseason, but ran into trouble in week three, going 10-for-17 for a mere 63 yards, a "Captain Checkdown" kind of performance.

Additionally, Detroit's defense hasn't been too bad the past couple of weeks.

Prediction: Lions 31 Bills 10

Indianapolis Colts at Cincinnati Bengals (-3, 38), 7:00 pm - You won't see much, if any, of the regular starting QBs in any game this weekend, this one being no exception. Andrew Luck and Andy Dalton will sit this dance out, leaving backups in charge.

This is really a toss-up game, as both teams appear ready to rock and roll into the regular season. Give the Colts a try with the added points in what could turn into a close call.

Prediction: Colts 17 Bengals 14

Philadelphia Eagles (-3, 40) at New York Jets, 7:00 pm - Apparently, the Jets have everything figured out at QB - for now - but the Eagles are still wondering whether Mike Vick or Nick Foles will be the starter come opening weekend.

Obviously, the guys who make the line see Philly as the superior team, with or without starting players and there's good reason to go with them. Both teams come in 2-1 preseason and can finish no worse than .500, so few chances will be taken with key players risking injury.

Prediction: Eagles 20 Jets 13

Pittsburgh Steelers at Carolina Panthers (-3 1/2, 36 1/2), 7:30 pm - The Steelers ave looked absolutely horrid, posing an 0-3 record and losing last week to the equally bad Chiefs. Carolina has been moving in positive directions on both sides of the ball and that momentum should carry bench-warmers to their day in the sun.

The Panthers won their only other home game, so the needle points to them as an easy winner here.

Prediction: Panthers 24 Steelers 6

Jacksonville Jaguars (-3, 40) at Atlanta Falcons, 7:30 pm - The biggest disappointment of the preseason has to be the Atlanta Falcons, who won the NFC South last season going away, but have posted an ugly 0-3 record thus far in preseason.

This may be the only time the Jaguars are favored on the road this season, and, despite the obvious disparity in the potential on both sides, one has to go with the visiting team only because the Falcons have been so disorganized. Lots of Atlanta players will be getting long looks, but it appears the coaching staff has given up on preseason, in hopes that the lights go on once the games get real.

Prediction: Jaguars 21 Falcons 10

New Orleans Saints at Miami Dolphins (-6, 36), 7:30 pm - No Drew Brees, no win for the Saints, especially on the road, where New Orleans seems always to find trouble coming their way.

Miami will likely sit Ryan Tannehill, though maybe not for the whole game, giving the Dolphins something of an edge. Pat Devlin, third-year pro out of Delaware, will see most of the action behind center and should be familiar enough with the offense to make things happen against a still-struggling Saints' defense.

Prediction: Dolphins 31 Saints 16

New York Giants at New England Patriots (-1, 39), 7:30 pm - What looks like an excellent match-up will be devoid of most of the star, though with both teams seeking replacements at various positions, there should be plenty of players trying to impress the coaches.

New England was gob-smacked by the Lions last week, while the Giants went to overtime, losing by a field goal to the Jets, 24-21.

This game could have a similar flavor, as the two teams have a heated history, but the result will be different - for New York.

Prediction: Giants 27 Patriots 24

Washington Redskins (-1 1/2, 37 1/2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 7:30 pm - It was announced that RG3 will get the start in the Redskins' season opener, which was pretty much assured as the blue chip QB saw no preseason action.

Pat White has been getting plenty of playing time because of RG3's absence and he will split time with Rex Grossman here.

The Bucs upended Miami, 17-16, last week and seem to be on the upswing. Backup QB Mike Glennon was just 3-for-9 passing last week, but he did throw the winning TD pass with just 1:03 to go. He may be up to the task this week.

Prediction: Buccaneers 20 Redskins 17
