Thursday, November 28

Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions (-6, 50), 12:30 pm - Aaron Rodgers is still nursing a fractured collarbone, so the Lions may actually win a Turkey Day event. Since 2001, the Lions are 1-11 on Thanksgiving, their last fiasco a 34-31 overtime loss to the Texans last season.

Bear in mind that the Lions are always the home team, as is the tradition. They are also 1-9 SU and 3-7 ATS against the Packers the past five seasons, but, seriously, if the Lions can't produce a six-point win when the opponent has their former all-pro QB on the bench, then there's no justice in the world.

The best part about this game is that it might be over before you eat, so that should the Lions lose, you won't... well, you know.

Prediction: Lions 31 Packers 17

Oakland Raiders at Dallas Cowboys (-9, 47), 4:30 pm - Dallas sucked the life out of MetLife Stadium last week, defeating the Giants with a game-ending field goal, 24-21, while Oakland failed in the waning minutes of their 23-19 home loss to Tennessee.

Tony Romo is throwing well for Dallas, and his counterpart on the Raiders, Matt McGloin seems capable of guiding the offense, but not making critical plays.

Dallas looks like the choice, because they are 4-1 at home, and two of those wins - over St. Louis and Washington - were by large margins. DeMarco Murray is also due for a big game running the ball though the Raiders are OK (99.1 ypg) against the run.

Prediction: Cowboys 28 Raiders 13

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens (-3, 40 1/2), 8:30 pm - This could be a good game to counteract the effects of turkey's tryptophan and keep viewers awake and engaged.

Both teams are 5-6 and in the hunt for the final wild card in the AFC, along with four other 5-6 teams, but the Steelers have won three straight and looked pretty confident beating Cleveland on the road last week, 27-11. The Ravens also had a good week on defense, holding the Jets to just three points in their home win, 19-3.

Weather shouldn't be an issue, so expect more throwing than running. These games are usually close, and the Steelers won the first meeting this season, 19-16, in Pittsburgh. Take the points in a defensive struggle.

Prediction: Steelers 17 Ravens 14

Sunday, December 1

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers (-9, 41 1/2), 1:00 pm - Carolina has won seven in a row and are just a game behind the Saints in the NFC South, so this divisional clash is a big deal, and the Buccaneers have won three straight themselves, last week knocking off the Lions on the road in a 24-21 victory.

The Bucs have played better than their 3-8 record, having lost by 10 or more points just twice. Both offense and defense are finally getting to a competent level and that could prove to keep this one close, as Carolina has just barely survived the past two weeks in wins over New enland and Miami.

The Panthers clubbed the Buccaneers, 31-13, back in October. This one figures to be a lot closer.

Prediction: Panthers 26 Buccaneers 21

Jacksonville Jaguars at Cleveland Browns (-7, 40 1/2), 1:00 pm - The Jaguars have won two out of their last three - both on the road - so maybe being in the cold in Cleveland will suit their style.

The Browns were completely overwhelmed by the Pittsburgh defense in a 27-11 home loss last week and have lost five of their last six, so are they really the better team?

Jacksonville is primed for the upset. Cleveland can't run the ball (neither can Jacksonville), but the Jaguar defense has played better lately.

Prediction: Jaguars 20 Browns 16

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts (-4, 45), 1:00 pm - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has turned heads lately with the Titans. He threw for 320 yards and two scores last week and the Titans are sticking with him here in Indy, which shuffled him off to Buffalo a few seasons back, so it might be a bit of "show 'em" time for the Tennessee QB.

The Colts haven't been very intimidating on defense of late, allowing 105 points over their last three games, two of those resulting in losses. Arizona thumped them good last week, 40-11, and the Colt defense is reeling at just the wrong time.

The Titans beat them two weeks ago, 30-27, and a win here will close the gap for first place in the division to one game. Tennessee will be up for this one and there's not much the Colts can do about it.

Prediction: Titans 34 Colts 31

--- Story continues below ---

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings (even, 49), 1:00 pm - Josh McCown will get the start again for the Bears, as Jay Cutler is still out with injury, but is expected back against the Cowboys next week.

That leaves the Bears with a shaky offense, and the defense didn't look all that good in their 42-21 loss at St. louis last week.

The Vikings tied Green Bay, 26-26, last week, which says plenty about their offense, and the Minnesota defense is last in the league, allowing 31.5 points per game. That's good news for the Bears, who could use some.

Prediction: Bears 31 Vikings 27

Miami Dolphins at New York Jets (-1, 39), 1:00 pm - Rex Ryan is a stubborn guy, so he's sticking with starting QB Geno Smith, who has stunk up the place the past two weeks in losses at Buffalo (37-14) and Baltimore (19-3).

Smith is undeniably one of the worst QBs in the league, which will make stumbling Ryan Tannehill of the Dolphins look good. Both teams are locked into the wild card hunt at 5-6, making this almost a "must win" kind of game. The pressure is squarely on Smith and the NY fans may not be very forgiving any mistakes by the rookie.

Tough to say, but Smith needs some seasoning, and the Jets need a new QB (and maybe a new coach).

Prediction: Dolphins 24 Jets 10

New England Patriots (-9, 47) at Houston Texans, 1:00 pm - The Patriots and Tom Brady may have gotten jobbed two weeks ago in their 24-20 loss on Monday night, but they made all the right moves erasing a 24-0 half time deficit to beat the Broncos, 34-31 in OT last Sunday.

Not much to say here except that the Texans have lost nine in a row and being at home probably isn't going to help.

Prediction: Patriots 40 Texans 23

Arizona Cardinals at Philadelphia Eagles (-3, 49), 1:00 pm - This could be the best game of the week, as Arizona has surged to 7-4 with four straight wins and are in the wild card conversation, while the Eagles are deadlocked with Dallas atop the NFC East, at 6-5.

Defense could be a key component to finding a win, and the Cardinals have the league's second-stingiest run defense, allowing just 81.3 yards per game.

Philadelphia has weapons galore on offense, but the Cards have Carson Palmer, Michael Floyd and Larry Fitzgerald, a potent passing attack.

This one could go down to the wire, but the Eagles are just 1-4 at home this season.

Prediction: Cardinals 34 Eagles 31
