Fearless Rick's NFL Preview - NFC East

Rick Gagliano | July 28, 2013

NFC East

Washington Redskins

2012 Record: 10-6

2013 Expected Finish: 11-5

Washington won its last seven games of the regular season to take the NFC East in a surprising run to the playoffs engineered mostly by Robert Griffin III. If RG3 is fully recovered from the leg injury suffered in the playoffs last year, the Redskins will be the team to beat in the division.

While the Redskins led the league in rushing at 169.3 yards per game, the defensive secondary needed retooling (allowed 281.9 ypg, 30th), so the Washington brass drafted for a couple of prospects, released, then re-signed cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who will likely be pressured by either David Amerson (top draft pick) or E.J. Biggers.

If the Redskins get the kind of production on offense that they expect, the defense may be inspired for a better performance.

NY Giants

2012 Record: 9-7

2013 Expected Finish: 10-6

All one needs to know about the Giants is that Eli Manning is healthy and ready to go for another season at quarterback. Manning has proven himself to be reliable, durable and a true gamer when it comes to crunch time in the fourth quarter.

As poor as the Giants' defense was in 2012 (383.4 yards allowed, 31st overall), it is almost certain to improve in the coming season. Despite the horrifying defensive stats, the Manning-led offense allowed the Giants the luxury of outscoring the opposition, 429-344, signifying that the G-men were tough in the red zone on both sides of the football.

A steady running game will be a huge lift, especially behind the blocking of all-purpose fullback, Henry Hynoski.

Dallas Cowboys

2012 Record: 8-8

2013 Expected Finish: 6-10

Every year, hopes run high in Dallas that Tony Romo will lead the Cowboys to Super Bowl glory, and every year, the Cowboys find ways to fall short, using injuries of spotty play for excuses.

With Romo getting on in years (he's 33), this season is likely to be more of the same, except that the whining may begin a bit earlier in the season.

Will fans be chanting for Kyle Orton if Romo has his usual early-season mistakes, many of which are caused by receivers running the wrong patterns? Dallas has the makings of a playoff team, just not the attitude, which is why, one must suppose, they're still known as "America's Team," populated with slackers and cheaters.

Philadelphia Eagles

2012 Record: 4-12

2013 Expected Finish: 6-10

The Eagles unloaded head coach Andy Reid after the team imploded for the second year in a row. It was probably a good move, because the Eagles need to rebuild, starting with the coaching staff, which, under Reid, was distracted and not focused on winning.

Next, the Eagles need to shelf Mike Vick, which probably won't be a problem, since he's likely to self-injure by week four. Nick Foles is a better long-term option at QB, but he needs lots of seasoning, and will probably get plenty in the second half of the campaign.
