Thursday, October 29

7:00 pm North Carolina (-3, 54 1/2) at Pittsburgh - Solid ACC action here, both teams real sleepers at 6-1 and undefeated in the conference.

Pollsters have been high on the Tar Heels, and recently put the Panthers in the Top 25, but, polls mean nothing when two good teams meet.

Pitt has been living on the edge. Since their 27-24 loss at Iowa, they've managed to win four straight, by 3, 7, 3 and 3 points, the last coming in a 23-20 win at Syracuse. The Tar Heels have won six straight since losing their season opener, 17-13, to South Carolina. Last week's 26-13 win over Virginia marked their lowest point total since their opening week loss, and, by a wide margin.

North Carolina is scoring at a pace of 38.4 per game and their defense also allows fewer points than do the Panthers (16.7 vs. 21.6).

Prediction: Tar Heels 34 Panthers 17

7:30 pm West Virginia at TCU (-14 1/2, 75) - The Mountaineers hit the skids the moment conference play began, with three straight losses - to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor, the latter putting up a boatload of points in a 62-38 win.

Now facing their fourth straight ranked foe - and maybe the best in the Big 12 - West Virginia is up against it and they're on the road to boot. Tough times, indeed, but a coming out party for TCU's offense.

Prediction: Horned Frogs 51 Mountaineers 27

Friday, October 30

7:00 pm Louisville (-12, 42) at Wake Forest - Only Friday night game worth viewing and this one barely makes the grade. Louisville is 3-4, but they've played a tough schedule. Their losses have been to Auburn, Houston, Clemson and Florida State. Notably, the loss to Clemson was only by three points, 20-17.

Wake Forest had some hope early on, but they've lost four of their last five and the last two have been whoppers, losing 50-14 at North Carolina and then being squashed by NC State at home, 35-17. Stick a fork in the 3-5 Dekes, they're done.

Prediction: Cardinals 38 Demon Deacons 9

Saturday, October 31

12:00 pm Syracuse at Florida State (-20 1/2, 52) - Yet another ACC game starts off Saturday's features, but the Orange have been knocking on the door and the Seminoles just took their first loss of the season last week, stunned at Georgia Tech, 22-16.

Florida State hasn't been overly impressive, and they are vulnerable. Syracuse was close to beating Pitt last week, finally giving way in a 23-20 defeat.

Syracuse could surprise Florida State, as the 'Noles are a little bruised - physically and mentally - after their Georgia Tech loss. Could be a shocker.

Prediction: Orange 26 Seminoles 23

12:00 pm Ole Miss (-7 1/2, 57 1/2) at Auburn - The Tigers dropped to 1-3 in the SEC after their 4OT, 54-46, loss to Arkansas last week. The Rebels got back on track, whipping the Aggies of Texas A&M, 23-3, so it appears the defense has found itself. The Rebels are 3-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall, but,t why need to win this one to keep pace with Alabama and LSU, who meet next week.

Last season, Auburn won at Mississippi, 35-31, and this year they get the Rebels at home in a heated rivalry. Both teams have plenty of weapons at their disposal, but this could easily become a field position kind of game, in which the Tigers, at home, could find advantageous.

Expecting the Rebels to win, but in a close call, so Auburn, with points, becomes the pick.

Prediction: Rebels 21 Tigers 17

3:00 pm USC (-6, 61 1/2) at California - Once the 5-0 Cal Bears realized they hadn't played anybody really good, they ran into Utah and UCLA in successive games and suddenly they're 5-2 and just 2-2 in the conference.

Now they host an angry bunch in the Trojans, who may actually be the best team in the conference, with loads of talent on offense.

Cal looks like a classic flame-out. Even at home, they're likely no match for a motivated USC squad.

Prediction: Trojans 41 Golden Bears 24
