Fearless Rick's NFL Week 5 Picks - late Games

Arizona Cardinals (-2 1/2, 44) at Detroit Lions 4:05 pm - The Lions are not nearly as bad as their 0-4 record would have one believe, especially after the in-plain-sight robbery by the refs in Monday night's loss at Seattle.

Arizona met a rugged defense last week against the Rams and folded like a cheap suit late in the game. Their 3-1 record has been built with wins over New Orleans, Chicago, and San Francisco, not exactly a lineup of high quality teams, so, their value is questionable at this juncture in the season.

Detroit will win a few games (probably more than just a few), so this looks like a good place to start, being underdogs in their own building.

Prediction: Lions 20 Cardinals 17

New England Patriots (-8 1/2, 49) at Dallas Cowboys 4:25 pm - Were Tony Romo healthy (he's not) this might be an even game, but without him, despite home field, the Cowboys are up against it with Brady and Co. coming to visit.

Not only have the Patriots done nothing but win this season, they're also coming off a bye week, which means they have either rested up, prepared even more than they usually do, or both.

Thanks mostly to their defense, Dallas has had a chance to win all of their games, so this is not going to be an easy win for the Pats. Getting more than a TD at home is usually too tempting to resist.

Prediction: Patriots 30 Cowboys 25

Denver Broncos (-5 1/2, 43) at Oakland Raiders 4:25 pm - Denver basically has owned the Raiders for a long time and this should be just another in a ling string of AFC West wins for Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

While the Raiders are better than they've been the past few years, they're still about six to eight quality players away from being a true division contender. Denver has to guard against taking this game too lightly, but professionalism and experience should carry the day.

Prediction: Broncos 28 Raiders 14

San Francisco 49ers at New York Giants (-7 1/2, 43) 8:30 pm - In a bad way the 49ers have to travel cross-country to play a Giants team coming off a road win, which spells plenty of trouble for a team that hasn't won since the season opener.

There's a good chance that QB Colin Kaepernick will be benched at some point if the 'Niners fall behind, but Blaine Gabbert can't even begin to solve the problems plaguing this team.

Capable of putting up a load of points, the Giants, on the other side of the ball, should not have any issues containing Sf's sputtering, inefficient offense.

Prediction: Giants 24 49ers 16

Monday, October 12

Pittsburgh Steelers at San Diego Chargers (-3, 45 1/2) 8:30 pm - There isn't much to this game since Ben Roethlisberger remains sidelined with a knee injury and is likely to sit out Week 5, meaning that Mike Vick will be behind center for the Steelers.

Vick isn't nearly as mobile as he was in a previous life (before dog-fighting, jail, etc.) and won't be able to produce a win for the Steelers against a solid San Diego team. Pittsburgh fans better hope Big Ben gets healthy soon.

Prediction: Chargers 24 Steelers 13

Byes: Carolina, Miami, Minnesota, NY Jets
