Sports Illustrated November 28, 1983

This College Basketball Preview issue features Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins of the North Carolina Tar Heels signifying that they are ranked #1 preseason in Division 1 men's college basketball. This is the first (1st, FC) Michael Jordan Sports Illustrated cover.

The Tar Heels were a powerhouse in the 80s with Jordan, Perkins, Brad Doherty and James Worthy on teams from 1981-83. North Carolina won the national championship in the 1981-82 season, beating Georgetown, 63-62 in the final game. Michael Jordan, then a freshman, scored the winning basket.

Known to his fans as MJ, His Airness, Mike or Air, Michael Jordan endeared himself to fans in North Carolina and later with the Chicago Bulls of the NBA where he led the team to six professional championships. Jordan also played in the Olympics twice for the USA, in 1984 and 1992, the latter as a member of the Dream Team with Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone and Charles Barkley.

Jordan has appeared on 49 Sports Illustrated covers from 1983 to 2003, not only as a member of the Bulls, Tar Heels and Olympic Team, but as a player for baseball's Chicago White Sox, the NBA's Washington Wizards, as a golfer, in cariacature and as a hologram as well.

He is best remembered in the red and black colors of the Chicago Bulls, wearing number 23, though one cover has him wearing the number 45.
