NFL Week 4 Picks - Late Games
NFL Week 4 Late Games
All times Eastern
4:05 pm Cleveland Browns at Oakland Raiders (-2 1/2, 45) - Cleveland holds edges in both scoring and points allowed, so the only thing the 0-3 Raiders have going for them is home field. Against the Browns, who have played in front of booing fans for years, an aggressive fan base is not a big plus.
Rookie QB Baker Mayfield gives the Browns an edge, and Oakland, even if they have a lead, has shown no ability to hold it.
Coin Flip: Cleveland
PREDICTION: Browns 27 Raiders 20
It would be tough to make a case for the Cardinals winning at this juncture. They split with the Seahawks last season and Seattle is coming off its first win of the year, a 24-13 win over Dallas in which they dominated the Cowboys.
Coin Flip: Arizona
PREDICTION: Seahawks 20 Cardinals 10
In that 2016 game an shootout was expected. Instead, the Giants emerge victorious at home, 16-13. The result here is probably going to be different, and higher-scoring. The Giants may be rounding into form after a 27-22 win at Houston, their second straight road game after a 20-15 home loss to Jacksonville. Overall, New York isn't that bad and doesn't deserve to be underdogs at home.
Coin Flip: New York Giants
PREDICTION: Giants 37 Saints 34
San Francisco isn't much better, allowing 29.7, thus the big line. Taking the easy way out, the Chargers at home, despite the big cover line, may be a sweet choice.
Coin Flip: San Francisco
PREDICTION: Chargers 35 49ers 24
Last week's 30-27 win over the Bucs was a pointed reminder that defense is dead for many NFL teams, such with the rash of roughing the QB penalties and rules about hitting watering down the talent pool for good defensive players. Pittsburgh has suffered more than most teams, allowing 90 points in three games (thats an average of 30 per game, for the math-challenged).
The Ravens suffer no such fallout on defense. They are #1 in yards allowed and fifth in points allowed, at 17.0 per game. A usually-close game in a tough division, Baltimore can get a leg up with a road win.
Coin Flip: Pittsburgh
PREDICTION: Ravens 24 Steelers 14
8:15 pm Kansas City Chiefs (-4 1/2, 56) at Denver Broncos - The Chiefs have wowed everybody with the best offense in the league (39.3 ppg), but their defense leaves much to be desired, allowing 30.7 points per game.
Denver, clicking for a mere 20.3 points per outing, will have a hard time keeping up with Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and the rest of the Chiefs' cast.
Coin Flip: Denver
PREDICTION: Chiefs 38 Broncos 24

Week 4 early Games
4:05 pm Seattle Seahawks (-3, 38 1/2) at Arizona Cardinals - How bad are the Cardinals? Their 20 points in three games is the worst offensive showing in the league. Their -54 point differential is easily the league's worst.
4:25 pm New Orleans Saints (-3 1/2, 50) at New York Giants - The last time the Saints and Giants lined up against each other was September 18, 2016, and the quarterbacks were Eli Manning and Drew Brees, the same who will guide their respective offenses again.
4:25 pm San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers (-10 1/2, 47 1/2) - Jimmy Garoppolo has been lost for the season with a torn ACL, so the 49ers will start C.J. Beathard at QB. In six games last season, Beathard was 1-5, but he was a rookie with no experience. A year later, he may fare better, especially against the defenseless Chargers, who are 31st in points allowed, giving up a whopping 31.0 per game.
8:20 pm Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers (-3, 51) - What happened to the Pittsburgh defense, a staple through the Super Bowl-winning seasons and a long-standing tradition in the Steel City?
Monday October 1
Bye: Carolina, Washington
