San Jose State at 7 Texas (-36.5, 52.5) 12:00 pm (ABC) - Judging by the ineffective Texas offense in their loss to Ohio State last week, and especially the performance of former Heisman hopeful Arch Manning, it would not be out of the question to take that big spread and hope that Manning is actually not as good as the preseason hype.
So why not? San Jose State missed two late field goal attempts and lost at home to Central Michigan, a score that gives the impression that the Spartan defense is OK, but their offense isn’t very productive and will have a hard time cracking the Texas defense, which is pretty darn good. The Longhorns may have a bumpy road ahead, and this game should quiet some of the critics, but they still won’t cover.
Coin Flip: Texas
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Longhorns 42 Spartans 10
SMU has an experienced QB in Kevin Jennings, but didn’t run the ball well in their opener, which explains why Baylor may have a shot here. Auburn rushed for 307 yards against the Bears and just 108 yards through the air.
Look for SMU to try to establish a rushing attack, which shouldn’t be that difficult against Baylor.
Coin Flip: Baylor
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Mustangs 34 Bears 27
Duke’s quarterback, sophomore Darian Mensah, was 27-for-34, 389 yards and 3 TDs in the opener. He transferred to Duke from Tulane and was ESPN’s top-ranked portal player during the off-season.
The way ranked teams were falling in week 1, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Blue Devils - who were 9-4 last season - pull off the upset.
Coin Flip: Duke
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Blue Devils 34 Fighting Illini 24
The Hawkeyes will have trouble handling QB Rocco Becht and the Cyclones’ offense, and the Iowa State defense may be better than Iowa’s. They went to Ireland and upended Kansas State in Week 0, and last week demolished South Dakota State, 55-7. They are a team on a mission.
Coin Flip: Iowa
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Cyclones 24 Hawkeyes 10
The Rebels plan on making life miserable for the Kentucky defense after rolling to a 63-7 blowout over Georgia State last week. Sophomore QB, Austin Simmons, threw for 341 yards and 3 scores, though he did throw two interceptions. He should be more careful against the Wildcats and help them roll to a nice conference win.
Coin Flip: Kentucky
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Rebels 35 Wildcats 17
