Week 5 Results: Rick: 3-10; Flip: 8-5
Cumulative Results: Rick: 24-33-2; Flip: 32-25-2

Friday, October 3

New Mexico at San Jose State (-2.5, 58.5) 10:00 pm (FS1) - Interesting match-up in the wide open Mountain West, where the Lobos have gotten off to a 3-1 start to their season, losing at Michigan in their opener, 34-17, but then racking up three convincing wins, notably hammering UCLA, 35-10, on the road.

San Jose State is 1-3 to open their conference schedule, yet the Spartans are slight favorites. Two of their three losses were by two points (Central Michigan, 16-14) and one point (at Stanford, 30-29). The other was at Texas, 38-7. Their only win was vs. Idaho, 31-28. Their record doesn’t inspire much confidence. Neither does the short spread.

Coin Flip: New Mexico

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Lobos 34 Spartans 26

Colorado State at San Diego State (-6.5, 41.5) 10:30 pm (CBSN) - The Rams are off to a poor, 1-3 start, the only win against a so-so squad from Northern Colorado. On the flip side, the Aztecs appear to be loaded for bear, off to a 3-1 start with shutouts over Stony Brook, 42-0, and Cal, 34-0. Last week’s 6-3 win at Northern Illinois speaks again to the strength of their defense.

This one could get ugly if the Aztecs find early success on offense.

Coin Flip: San Diego State

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Aztecs 31 Rams 14

Saturday, October 4

14 Iowa State at Cincinnati (-1.5, 55.5) 12:00 pm (ESPN2) - How good are the Bearcats that the oddsmakers put them up as slight favorites against 5-0 Iowa State and QB Rocco Becht.

Well, they’ve won three straight since losing their opener, 2017, to Nebraska, last week topping Kansas, 37-34. The Cyclones already have two conference wins, beating Kansas State, 24-21, in the season opener, and Arizona, 39-14, last week. They also gutted out a 16-13 win over arch-rival Iowa a few weeks ago, so they appear to be lining up an appearance in the post-season tournament and shouldn’t be sold short.

Coin Flip: Cincinnati

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Cyclones 27 Bearcats 24

Wisconsin at 20 Michigan (-17.5, 43) 12:00 pm (FOX) - The 2-2 Badgers are averaging 20 points per game which doesn’t bode well against the Wolverines, especially with Michigan hosting. The Baders are coming off two straight losses, 38-14 at Alabama, and last seen losing to Maryland, 27-10. Thye have a very tough schedule ahead, with Iowa, Ohio State, and Oregon directly following this game. They could go 0-for-October.

Michigan may not be a top 10 team this season, but the rebuilding is coming along well. They have two quality wins to their season, 34-17 over New Mexico, and last week’s 30-27 win at Nebraska. Their 24-13 defeat at Oklahoma, their only loss, wasn’t that bad, considering the Sooners’ offensive prowess.

Coin Flip: Michigan

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Wolverines 35 Badgers 10
