8:00 pm Wake Forest (-18, 57) at Rice - The Demon Deacons began their 2019 campaign with a 38-35 win over a tough Utah State team, and, if not drained from that effort, ought to be able to handle the Owls, who put up a good defense at Army, eventually falling, 14-7, last week.
An 0-2 start for Rice would not be unusual, though they've been 1-1 in each of the past two seasons. However, their record over the past three seasons (2016-19) is a dismal 4-31. Ouch! ACC teams usually have a big edge in talent over Conference USA, but, considering Rice's defensive approach and Wake's lack thereof, this could be close.
Coin Flip: Wake Forest
Prediction: Demon Deacons 31 Owls 24
Boise State, a perennial top twenty team, has already proven they can still play with the big boys, and should roll over the incoming Herd.
Marshall was 9-4 (6-2 in conference)
Coin Flip: Boise State
Prediction: Broncos 34 Thundering Herd 17
12:00 pm Army at #7 Michigan (-22 1/2, 47) - Opening the season with a 40-21 win over Middle Tennessee, the Wolverines are poised for a run at not just the Big Ten title, but a possible national championship.
This is a powerful offense with a capable defense that was 10-3 in 2018, finishing with horrible outings against Ohio State (62-39 loss) and Florida in the Peach Bowl, losing 41-15. The lack of solid defense was a focus in the off-season, so expect Michigan to tighten up and improve off their week one performance.
Army won, 14-7, over Rice, and was 11-2 last season. They're not going to go quietly and Michigan's defense, while improved, is not invincible.
Coin Flip: Michigan
Prediction: Wolverines 38 Black Knights24
Going 11-2 last season with wins over the likes of Navy, South Florida, and Virginia Tech, Cincinnati is not a team to be taken lightly. They have an adequate offense and a very strong defensive unit, both in evidence in their opener, a 24-14 win over UCLA. Ohio State may well win this game, but they'll have to work hard for it. An upset is possible.
Coin Flip: Ohio State
Prediction: Bearcats 23 Buckeyes 21
Syracuse surely took note of that score, but their stalwart defense delivered a shutout as well, living large at Liberty, 24-0. Tommy Devito is the Orange QB, and he's largely untested. Advantage Maryland.
Coin Flip: Syracuse
Prediction: Terrapins 21 Orange 17
West Virginia comes off an 8-4 season and an opening week win over lowly James Madison, a game they should have won by 20 points, not seven. That generous point spread should serve a boon to lovers of underdogs.
Coin Flip: West Virginia
Prediction: Mountaineers 27 Tigers 24

Week 1: Rick: 7-11; Coin: 12-6
9:00 pm Marshall at Boise State (-10 1/2, 56 1/2) - The Thundering Herd was making plenty of hoof noise in its 56-17 home win over VMI last week, but will be hard-pressed to repeat such an offensive explosion against the Broncos, who came back for the 36-31 win at Florida State in its season opener, shutting out the Seminoles in the second half.
Saturday, September 7
12:00 pm Cincinnati at #5 Ohio State (-16, 55 1/2) - While the Buckeyes made fast work of Florida Atlantic last week with a 45-21 win, the defense was not up to high standards and that could pose a problem against the hungry Bearcats.
12:00 pm #21 Syracuse at Maryland (-2, 57) - The Terrapins had a down year in 2019, going 5-7, though the schedule included the likes of Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State and other Big Ten teams. Junior Josh Jackson secured the starting quarterback position and threw for 245 yards and four TDs against Howard in last week's 79-0 romp.
12:00 pm West Virginia at Missouri (-14, 62 1/2) - Here are two middle of the road teams squaring off in a game nobody can accurately predict. The Mizzou gets a leg up on home field, but they weren't impressing anybody, winning at Wyoming, 37-31.
