NFL Week 9 Picks - Late Games
NFL Week 9 Late Games
All times Eastern
4:05 pm Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders (-2, 51 1/2) - This is a quality match-up between two potential wild cards, and in the case of Oakland, a possible division winner. The Lions thrashed the Giants last week, 31-26, while the Raiders dropped a close one at Houston, 27-24. It was Oakland's second straight loss, but they seem to be heading in the right direction after last season's 4-12 flop.
Oakland hasn't had a home game since September 29, so they've spent the entire month of October on the road, including a game in London (24-21 W over the Bears), a bye week and two road games which were both losses. They should benefit greatly from being back by the Bay. The Lions are 1-1-1 away from home. Last week's victory over the Giants snapped a three-game losing streak. Plenty of scoring from two prolific offenses expected.
Coin Flip: Detroit
Prediction: Raiders 34 Lions 28
Their 27-23 defeat at Tennessee was more of the same for the offense, with QB James Winston turning the ball over four times - two fumbles and two interceptions - and that's unlikely to help against the pass rush and secondary of Seattle. Add in wicked crowd noise and this has all the makings of a rout. Seattle has won four of its last five and is uncharacteristically 2-2 at home, but that will change.
Coin Flip: Tampa Bay
Prediction: Seahawks 38 Buccaneers 16
The schedule lightens up for the Browns starting here, so they could make some headway.
Denver had an ugly start to its season, losing four straight, but they're just 2-6 and putting up an average of just 15.6 points per outing. They are 1-3 at home, and while their defense generally plays well, they get tired from being on the field so often.
Coin Flip: Cleveland
Prediction: Browns 27 Broncos 20
The 3-5 Chargers losses have all been by seven points or fewer and they come off consecutive road games, in which they lost at Tennessee, 23-20, and last week defeated the Bears, 17-16. They could keep this close, but the Chargers don't seem capable of scoring consistently.
Coin Flip: Los Angeles Chargers
Prediction: Packers 23 Chargers 17
Defensively, the Patriots are extremely stingy, allowing a ridiculous 7.6 points per game. They've registered two shutouts, held the Redskins to seven points, the Steelers to three, no team has scored more than 14 points in any game against them, and are 8-0, the only unbeaten team in the AFC.
Baltimore is 5-3, having won three straight, including week seven's 30-16 romp at Seattle. The Ravens are coming off a bye and should be fresh as daisies for this epic encounter. Underdogs at home, Baltimore appears ready to hand the Pats their first loss of the year.
Coin Flip: New England
Prediction: Ravens 21 Patriots 18
8:15 pm Dallas Cowboys (-7, 48) at New York Giants - In week one, the Cowboys took the measure of the Giants, 35-17, at Dallas. Eli Manning was quarterbacking the G-Men back then, but has since been replaced by Daniel Jones, and the offense has shown signs of life.
New York's defense, however, is among the worst in the league, and Dallas is coming off a bye week, so they should be up and at 'em early and often. Jones may be able to keep this one close for a while, but eventually Dallas, who needs a win to remain atop the division, should prevail.
Coin Flip: New York Giants
Prediction: Cowboys 34 Giants 23

Week 9 Early Games
4:05 pm Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Seattle Seahawks (-6 1/2, 53) - The Buccaneers are about where most people thought they'd be, at the bottom of the NFC South standings with a 2-5 record, having lost three straight, to New Orleans, Carolina and Tennessee. This is a third straight game away from Tampa, though the Buccaneers had a bye week in week seven, after a 37-26 loss to Carolina in London.
4:25 pm Cleveland Browns at Denver Broncos (-1 1/2, 43) - Much of Cleveland's struggling this season can be attributed to their defense, which is allowing 25.9 points per game, making it tough for Baker Mayfield and the talented Browns' offense. Having to score four or more touchdowns to win a game week after week takes its toll, which is why the Browns are just 2-5. The offense is scoring at a 19 ppg pace. It's notable, however, that Cleveland's current three-game losing streak has come against San Francisco, Seattle, and New England, some heady stuff there.
4:25 pm Green Bay Packers (-3, 46) at Los Angeles Chargers - Hard to fault anybody picking Green Bay as a slight road favorite. The Packers are rolling along at 7-1, have won four straight and are 3-0 on the road. Aaron Rodgers is having an all-pro season and the backfield of Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams provides the Packers with a devastating 1-2 punch in the rushing department.
8:20 pm New England Patriots (-3 1/2, 44 1/2) at Baltimore Ravens - Great game for Sunday night, as usual, pitting the two highest-scoring offenses in the league against one another. New England is on top, averaging 31.3 points per game, with the Ravens close behind, at 30.6.
Monday, November 4
Bye: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans
