Week 0 Results: Rick: 2-3; Flip: 3-2

Thursday, August 28

25 Boise State (-5.5, 62.5) at South Florida 5:30 pm (ESPN) - Last season, Boise State finished 12-2, their only losses to Oregon (37-34) and Penn State, 31-14, in the CFP quarterfinal. They won the MWC without a loss. Sure, there will be some falloff without Ashton Jeanty, the nation’s leading rusher, but Maddux Madsen returns at QB on a very capable offense and the Broncos usually-stingy defense.

The Bulls, in 2024, didn’t do well, finishing 7-6 with a 41-39, 5-OT win over San Jose State in the Hawaii Bowl. Losses to Alabama (42-16) and Miami (50-15) were telling. They don’t figure to be much better this season, and may start out 0-3, as they meet Florida and Miami consecutively after this contest. Why is the line less than a TD?

Coin Flip: South Florida

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Broncos 38 Bulls 21

Nebraska (-6.5, 54) at Cincinnati 9:00 pm (ESPN) - Having moved to the Big 12, last season was the pits for Cincinnati, 5-7 overall with a 3-6 conference record. Though they’re the home team, this is a neutral site game being played at GEHA Field in Kansas City.

The Bearcats were one of the better defensive teams last season, but lack of consistency on offense cost them losses in their last five games after a 5-2 start.

Nebraska wasn’t much better, 3-6 in the Big Ten and 7-6 overall with a 20-15 win over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl. Much was made about QB Dylan Raiola last season, but he wasn’t magic and he’s back this year. The Cornhuskers lost five of their last six in the regular season.

Defense and turnovers will make all the difference here.

Coin Flip: Nebraska

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Bearcats 24 Cornhuskers 21

Miami (OH) at Wisconsin (-17.5, 39) 9:00 pm (BTN) - The Bagders look to get back to a bowl game in 2025. Last year, after a 5-2 start, they went straight downhill, losing their last five straight for a 5-7 finish.

Miami went 7-1 in the MAC, losing to conference champion Ohio, 38-3, but the stuffed Colorado State, 43-17, in the Arizona Bowl to finish 9-5 overall. They should not be taken lightly, even though QB Brett Gabbert has gone to the NFL. They’re usually disciplined and well-coached and can keep this one close, possibly pulling off an upset.

Coin Flip: Miami (OH)

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Badgers 26 RedHawks 20

Friday, August 29

Auburn (-2.5, 57.5) at Baylor 8:00 pm (FOX) - Pretty good match-up here, as Baylor was near the crowded top of the Big 12 with a 6-3 record last season and sports a high-energy offense. Auburn had a very rare off-year, going just 5-7 and 2-6 in the SEC, but are expected to rebound in 2025.

This is going to be a tough place to start the season for the Tigers. Baylor may actually be better than last year and Auburn still has many question marks and holes to fill, though their defense appears adequate.

Coin Flip: Baylor

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Bears 27 Tigers 21

Georgia Tech (-4.5, 52.5) at Colorado 8:00 pm (ESPN) - Coach Prime will not hav his son quarterbacking this season, nor will he have the services of Travis Hunter, the two-way All-American. The Buffaloes will start Kaidon Salter, a transfer from a very successful Liberty program, at QB, which bodes well for them. Colorado, under Sanders, has utilized the transfer portal with great success (9-4 in 2024) and they should be competitive again this year.

The Yellow Jackets started off 2024 by upsetting Florida State and completed a grueling schedule a respectable 7-6, losing to Georgia, 44-42 in an epic 8-OT game and dropping a 35-27 decision in the Birmingham Bowl to Vanderbilt to close out the season. The also had Notre Dame, Louisville, and Miami (which they beat, 28-23) on last season’s tab.

Colorado has a huge offensive line and many returning juniors and seniors on defense. This could go down to the wire.

Coin Flip: Colorado

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Buffaloes 26 Yellow Jackets 24

UNLV (-10, 62.5) at Sam Houston 9:30 pm (CBSSN) - UNLV already has a win to their credit, though their 38-31 win over heavy underdog Idaho State was not inspiring, one reason why the line here is not larger in their favor.

Last week, the Conference USA Bearkats got schooled at Western Kentucky, 41-24, and the Rebels are probably looking to repair their reputation. Could be blowout city.

Coin Flip: Sam Houston

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Rebels 45 Bearkats 20
