Week 9 Results: Rick: 7-7; Flip: 6-8
Cumulative Results: Rick: 49-62-3; Flip: 58-53-3

Friday, October 31

25 Memphis (-13, 48.5) at Rice 7:00 pm (ESPN2) - The Tigers rallied for 17 4th quarter points in a 34-31 win over South Florida last week, so there may be some hangover from that emotional win.

The Rice Owls defeated independent UConn last week, 37-34 in double OT. They can play defense as well, which should help. Home field a big edge here. Maybe not an upset, but closer than the line suggests.

Coin Flip: Memphis

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Tigers 28 Owls 20

North Carolina at Syracuse (-3, 46) 7:30 pm (ESPN) - The Orange got demolished by that Ramblin’ Wreck, Georgia Tech, last week, 41-16, and have lost four straight ACC games, all by at least 13 points.

Coach Belichick’s minions almost upended Virginia last week, 17-16. While they have yet to win a conference game, they seem to be on the brink of breaking through. This could be their moment.

Coin Flip: North Carolina

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Tar Heels 23 Orange 17

Saturday, November 1

Penn State at 1 Ohio State (-21, 44.5) 12:00 pm (FOX) - Terry Smith inherited the head coaching job from James Franklin and now is put to the test. #1 Ohio State’s defense is #1 in points allowed, giving up only three TDs all season. They are 7-0.

Penn State is 3-4, and none of their losses have been by more than a TD, the last two, to Northwestern and at Iowa, were by one point each. This should be a good old butt-whipping, but pride will play a huge part for the Nittany Lions, who may see it respectable.

Coin Flip: Ohio State

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Buckeyes 24 Nittany Lions 10

9 Vanderbilt at 20 Texas (-3, 44.5) 12:00 pm (ABC) - Arch Manning remained in concussion protocol following the Longhorns, come-from-behind, 45-38 OT win at Mississippi State last week. Even if he plays, Vanderbilt has shown enough ability to stay on the field against anyone, anywhere.

Vandy has only one loss (Alabama), so they are still in the running for the national playoffs and a win here could vault them further up the rankings.

Coin Flip: Texas

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Commodores 27 Longhorns 24

10 Miami (-11.5, 50) at SMU 12:00 pm (ESPN) - SMU lost a heart-breaker at Wake Forest last week, 13-12, while the Hurricanes were pounding Stanford, 42-7.

SMU’s loss was their third, but only their first in the ACC, which means they still have a path to the conference championship game, although a win here is essential. Despite home field, they do not appear good enough to upset the 6-1 Hurricanes, whose only loss was a stunning setback two weeks ago, 24-21, to Louisville.

Coin Flip: SMU

Fearless Rick’s Pick: Hurricanes 34 Mustangs 17
