Week 4 Results: Rick: 3-5-1; Flip: 4-4-1
Friday, September 26
8 Florida State (-7, 59.5) at Virginia 7:00 pm (ESPN) - This game has upset potential writ large. 3-1 Virginia, outside of a 35-31 loss at NC State, has outscored their other three opponents by an average of 36 points. They’re home for the third week in a row and the campus will be buzzing with the Seminoles coming to town.
After ripping Alabama, 31-17 in Week 1, the Seminoles took out a pair of creampuffs (E. Texas A&M and Kent State) by massive scores and should have the offense well tuned for their ACC opener. Since it’s too early to tell which teams are for real, taking the points on the home team might be a worthwhile endeavor.
Coin Flip: Virginia
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Cavaliers 34 Seminoles 27
The Horned Frogs are 3-0 and haven’t allowed more than 24 points in any of their wins, each of which has been by multiple scores. This one could come down to a few key plays, lack of scoring in the red zone, or turnovers.
Coin Flip: Arizona State
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Horned Frogs 24 Sun Devils 23
Duke (-5.5, 60) at Syracuse 12:00 pm (ACCN) - This one is a puzzler. Syracuse just last week knocked off Clemson, 34-21, which may or may not be much of an accomplishment, seeing as the Tigers are now 1-3, similar to Florida State’s meltdown last season.
Duke, after losses to paper tiger Illinois (45-19) and a 34-27 setback at Tulane, got back on the winning track by defeating NC State, 45-33. Duke does not appear to have a credible defense, while the Orange have demonstrated ability on both sides of the ball. An upset looms with the Orange incredibly getting points at home.
Coin Flip: Duke
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Orange 38 Blue Devils 23
Bearing in mind that Notre Dame’s two losses were to Miami and Texas A&M, by three and one point, respectively. Arkansas, while 2-2, lost to Ole Miss by six (41-35) and Memphis, last week, 32-31, so they have more than a fighting chance against ND, especially on their home turf. If Notre Dame is actually better than their 1-2 record, why is the line only four points?
Coin Flip: Arkansas
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Razorbacks 33 Fighting Irish 24
Trojan QB Jayden Maiava and budding superstar, RB Waymond Jordan lead an offense that is third nationally in total yards from scrimmage (583.8 ypg), which is likely too much for the Illinois defense to handle.
Coin Flip: USC
Fearless Rick’s Pick: Trojans 42 Fighting Illini 30
