NCAA Week 5 Picks: Coin: 7-10; Rick: 8-9
Cumulative: Coin: 43-50; Rick 56-37

Thursday, October 11

7:30 pm Texas Tech at TCU (-7, 61) - The Red Raiders demolished Oklahoma State, 41-17, three weeks back and was not embarrassed by West Virginia, losing, 42-34, September 29, with their second-string QB playing.

With Alan Bowman good to go this week, the TCU defense will need to be on their toes. The Horned Frogs' last three games haven't been good. A 40-28 loss to Ohio State, a 31-16 loss at Texas, and a narrow, 17-14, win over Iowa State puts a question mark on this team's ability. Take the generous seven points. Texas Tech will be competitive here.

Coin Flip: Texas Tech

PREDICTION: Red Raiders 34 Horned Frogs 24

Friday, October 12

7:00 pm #23 South Florida (-7, 61 1/2) at Tulsa - Good to see 5-0 South Florida back in the rankings and this should be an easy on for the Bulls. Tulsa is 1-4 and reeling.

Coin Flip: South Florida

PREDICTION: Bulls 42 Golden Hurricane 20

9:00 pm Air Force at San Diego State (-11, 43 1/2) - With four straight wins, including last week's upset at Boise State (19-13), the Aztecs are emerging as the class of the Mountain West conference. Their only loss was an opening weekend, 31-10, defeat at Sanford.

The falcons may still be celebrating their 35-7 win over Navy, but their 2-3 record should have them concerned. Last season's 28-24 win by San Diego State was a road win for the Aztecs. Expect a larger margin this time around.

Coin Flip: Air Force

PREDICTION: Aztecs 34 Falcons 17

10:00 pm Arizona at Utah (-13 1/2, 51 1/2) - The Utes are 3-2 after hammering Stanford last week, 40-21, and, while this game looks like a walkover, the Utes would do well to guard against complacency.

The Utes can use this game and games against USC and UCLA in the next two weeks to get ready for their November schedule, which includes tough meetings with Oregon and Colorado. The PAC-10 South is very much up for grabs and the Utes need a win here to remain relevant. This being just their third home game, they should win going away.

Coin Flip: Utah

PREDICTION: Utes 38 Wildcats 21

Saturday, October 13

12:00 pm Minnesota at Ohio State (-29 1/2, 50 1/2) - That line may appear huge, but considering that the Golden Gophers are 0-2 in conference play and the Buckeyes are, well, awesome, then maybe four+ touchdowns isn't such a big deal.

Ohio State is scoring at a clip of 49 points per game, and allowing 20, so there's your line. Add three points for home field and the Buckeyes pass this test with flying colors.

Coin Flip: Minnesota

PREDICTION: Buckeyes 54 Golden Gophers 16

12:00 pm #14 Florida (-7, 50 1/2) at Vanderbilt - Exceeding all expectations thus far, the Gators are coming off two impressive wins - 13-6 at Mississippi State and last week's stunning, 27-19, win over LSU.

As usual, Vanderbilt doesn't quite make the grade, now 3-3 after losing, 41-13, at Georgia last week. They get home filed, but will have trouble scoring on the Gators, who are allowing just 14.8 points per game (8th nationally). At 5-1, Florida's only loss was to Kentucky, which is no shame. The Gators look to crack the top 10 with a big effort here.

Coin Flip: Vanderbilt

PREDICTION: Gators 31 Commodores 13

12:00 pm Nebraska at Northwestern (-4, 59 1/2) - This could be one of the worst teams ever to don the Nebraska jerseys and it's amusing - or confusing - that the Cornhuskers are getting a mere four points on the road. Nebraska is 0-5 and the Wildcats are coming off a 29-19 win at Michigan State. Northwestern's defense is good enough to keep Nebraska in check and maybe the offense can take advantage of turnovers.

Seriously, does anybody think the Wildcats will drop to 2-4 here? They're 2-1 in the Big Ten and games against Wisconsin and Iowa are still ahead on the schedule. A win here puts them in good position to capture the West division.

Coin Flip: Nebraska

PREDICTION: Wildcats 41 Cornhuskers 14
