NFL Week 9: Coin: 6-7; Rick: 9-4
Cumulative: Coin: 58-73-3; Rick: 61-70-3

Thursday, November 8

8:20 pm Carolina Panthers at Pittsburgh Steelers (-4, 51 1/2) - The Steelers are doing what they usually do through the middle of the season - winning every game. They've reeled off four straight and are on top of the AFC North having dispatched Baltimore last week, 23-16. The big problem for Pittsburgh is that the Panthers have won five of their last six and three in a row.

The Panthers are loaded offensively, and their defense, like Pittsburgh's, is adequate, though not spectacular. Thinking this game will come down to a field goal or less, the Panthers are the pick.

Coin Flip: Pittsburgh

PREDICTION: Carolina 29 Steelers 27

Sunday, November 11

1:00 pm Arizona Cardinals at Kansas City Chiefs (-16 1/2, 50) - At home, where they are 4-0, the Chiefs are winning by an average of just about 17 points per game.

Arizona has played thee road games and has one win, a 28-18 victory at San Francisco. A 34-0 loss at the Rams and a 27-17 loss at Minnesota completes their road resume. Even including their win, the Cardinals' road differential is still over 11. While the Arizona defense is not the worst (24.9 ppg, #18), their offense is #31, at 13.8 points per game. Kansas City scores, on average, 36.3, so can they win this by 17? Sure.

Coin Flip: Kansas City

PREDICTION: Chiefs 41 Cardinals 17

1:00 pm Atlanta Falcons (-4, 51) at Cleveland Browns - Don't look now, but the Falcons are 4-4, having won three straight. Sure, the first two were over Tampa Bay and the Giants, but last week's 38-14 win at Washington was something special and the team now feels they have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

The Browns are 2-6-1, but they're much better than last year's team and the future looks bright. However, this game will be played in the present and the 2018 Browns aren't quite there yet.

Coin Flip: Atlanta

PREDICTION: Falcons 34 Browns 20

1:00 pm Buffalo Bills at New York Jets (-7 1/2, 37) - Pick your poison here. The Bills could start either Nathan Peterman, Tyrelle Pryor, Matt Barkley, or Josh Allen at QB. Maybe three of them (not Peterman) could put up a good enough game to beat the Jets. Remember, the Jets have a rookie at quarterback as well - Sam Darnold - who just threw four picks in an ugly, 13-6, loss at Miami last week.

This is a game the Bills could conceivably win. While Buffalo is 2-7, the Jets aren't much better at 3-6.

UPDATE: Jets' Darnold is out for this game. Josh McCown will start at QB. The Bills have not named a starter, but the fear is that Peterman will get the nod.

Coin Flip: Buffalo

PREDICTION: Bills 18 Jets 13

1:00 pm Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears (-6 1/2, 45) - Matt Stafford was sacked 10 times in a 24-9 loss at Minnesota last week, but give the defense and Stafford credit. The defense only allowed 17 points (one Minnesota TD was on a fumble return) and Stafford, when he wasn't on his back, was 25-for-36 for 199 yards with no picks.

Now, the Bears D-line has to be licking their collective chops over those 10 sacks, but they'd best beware. At 3-5, the Lions aren't exactly out of the race in the NFC North and a win here would put them in the thick of things. Take the 6 1/2 points because the Lions could win this crucial game.

Coin Flip: Detroit

PREDICTION: Lions 24 Bears 21

1:00 pm Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts (-3, 47) - The Colts are surging while the Jags are fading. Indy has won two straight, over the Bills and Raiders (not saying much), but the Jags were on the wrong side of the scoreboard in each of their last four games.

Blake Bortles got his starting job back two weeks ago in London, but the result was a 24-18 loss to the Eagles. With the game in Indianapolis against a healthy Andrew Luck, the Jaguars are really up against it here.

Coin Flip: Jacksonville

PREDICTION: Colts 27 Jaguars 17

1:00 pm Miami Dolphins at Green Bay Packers (-9 1/2, 47 1/2) - The Packers looked pretty ordinary last Sunday night in Foxboro, losing a 31-17 decision to the Patriots. In fact, the Pack has looked ordinary all season, and their 3-4-1 record reflects just that. The red zone offense is weak and the defense is in the bottom half of the league, allowing 25.5 points per game.

Miami isn't much better, but they are 5-4. If the Dolphins are anything, it's opportunistic, though they're unlikely to get much from Rodgers and company. Still, the Packers haven't overwhelmed anybody except Buffalo (a 22-0 win in week 4) and the Dolphins might just stun them, despite being horrible on the road.

Coin Flip: Green Bay

PREDICTION: Dolphins 27 Packers 24

1:00 pm New England Patriots (-6 1/2, 46 1/2) at Tennessee Titans - Coming off a season-saving, 28-14, win at Dallas, the Titans return home with renewed vigor, but face one of the best teams in the league.

New England popped Green Bay, 31-17, but they're just 2-2 on the road, losing at Jacksonville and Detroit, winning at Chicago and Buffalo. This is also their third road game in the last four, so that may weight on them.

If the Titans can keep the turnovers down, they'll have a decent chance against the Patriots. Their defense is one of the best in the league (they are #1 in points allowed, 17.6) and the offense may be heating up.

Coin Flip: New England

PREDICTION: Titans 27 Patriots 20

1:00 pm New Orleans Saints (-4 1/2, 54) at Cincinnati Bengals - The Saints are in a different universe when it comes to offensive production. Only Kansas City scores with more frequency than New Orleans (36.3 vs. 34.9), and, while their defense leaves much to be desired, they got the job done against the Rams in a 45-35 victory last week.

Cincinnati had the week off and they're in good shape. At 5-3, they're right behind the 5-2-1 Steelers in the AFC North. They just don't have the firepower to keep up with the Saints.

Coin Flip: Cincinnati

PREDICTION: Saints 34 Bengals 24

1:00 pm Washington Redskins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3, 51 1/2) - The season is getting away from the Buccaneers, losers of five of their last six, the only win a 26-23 OT win against the Browns.

Washington ran into a buzzsaw against the Falcons last week, torched for a 38-14 loss. While the Redskins are nothing special, they're probably a little better than the Bucs, especially on defense. Tampa is dead last, allowing 34.4 points per game. Washington's defense is #9, allowing 21.5 per outing. Not exactly elite, but close, and their defense should carry the load.

Coin Flip: Tampa Bay

PREDICTION: Redskins 26 Buccaneers 13
